Oh Canada!

by Donald King

Southern Baptists in the United States are being asked to assist the Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists to help meet their goal of 1,000 Southern Baptist churches by the year 2020. With just over 230 churches now, there is plenty of work to do.

The picturesque images of Canada change dramatically when viewed through a spiritual lens. With a population in excess of 32 million people, it has been estimated that less than seven percent of the Canadian population even consider themselves to be evangelical Christians. There are 31 cities in Canada, with a population of 10,000 people or more, that have no evangelical witness at all. Since 1991, the number of Muslims now living in Canada has increased by more than 128% with an estimated population in excess of one million.

No other province or state comes close to the lostness found in the Province of Quebec. In fact, statistics show that Quebec is the most unevangelized region in North America. There are 6 million French Quebecois in Quebec. Outreach Canada (Christian research organization in Canada) reports that only 0.5% of the Quebecois population claim to be Christians. If these statistics are true, there are around 30,000 evangelical French Quebecois out of 6 million. Also, Quebec has more university students 'per capita' than any other region in North America. The Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists has set a goal of starting ten university community/young adult churches in the next five years.

Manitoba is a province with a population of 1.2 million people. There are two Canadian Convention of Southern Baptist churches in the entire province. The combined worship of both of these churches is less than 150 people.

Southern Baptists in the United States are being invited to work with their northern neighbors to impact lostness throughout Canada. Working through the Canadian convention's established or developing strategies, Southern Baptists can have a meaningful impact throughout the nation.

Two specific ways individuals can serve and help reach the goal of 1,000 churches in Canada include the following:

  • Students - Serve as a student missionary through the North American Mission Board with a Canadian assignment. Canada anticipates a need of 800 students or young adults (ages 17 - 26) serving in Canada by 2011. For more information regarding service as a student missionary, visit www.answerthecall.net or call 1 (800) 462-8657 ext. 6476.
  • Adults - Serve as a Mission Service Corps missionary through the North American Mission Board with a Canadian assignment. Mission Service Corps (MSC) missionaries play a vital role in staffing the personnel need throughout Canada. The possibility of future MSC service is limited only by the imagination. For more information about Mission Service Corps, visit www.answerthecall.net or call 1 (800) 462-8657 ext. 6473.
