Career Missionaries

Thank you for your interest in serving in missionary service through the North American Mission Board. Missionary service focuses upon Call, Criteria, Competency, and Contextual Fit.

Missionary Personnel of the North American Mission Board exists to assist you through the process of discerning your call, developing your competencies, the approval process, and employment with a convention partner.

What is a Career Missionary?

The definition of a missionary as approved by the North American Mission Board, in partnership with the International Mission Board, is:

  • "A Missionary is a person who, in response to God's call and gifting, leaves his/her comfort zone and crosses cultural, geographic or other barriers to proclaim the Gospel and live out a Christian witness in obedience to the Great Commission."

All jointly funded missionary personnel must complete the process for missionary approval, which includes the spouse. Missionary Personnel assists candidates through the process of approval. The titles below serve as broad categories and do not define specific missionary job assignments.

1. Missionary

The missionary category is for a qualified person in long-term service. The missionary candidate must have a sense of call into mission service, adequate training and experience, and good physical and emotional health. This category is for a full-time worker, appointed and supported in full or part by NAMB.

2. Family and Church

The family and church category is for the approval of a spouse whose mate serves as the primary worker. The health and attitude of spouses, as well as marital and family relationships, is important in the overall effectiveness of mission work. Therefore, these aspects of the spouse will be evaluated, even though the spouse is not salaried. The spouse is expected to be cooperative and supportive of the mate's ministry. The spouse is free to work outside the home.

What Is The Purpose Of Missionary Personnel?

Our Mission is to work strategically with North American Mission Board partners in processing and developing missionaries who are called to serve in North America and Canada.
